A Shamva woman lost her one‑year‑old baby after the child drowned in a 20‑litre bucket of water while she was working in the fields.

Abgirl Karuru (23) had left the now‑deceased infant, Rutendo Karuru, in the care of her 12‑year‑old daughter. The tragedy was discovered by neighbour Praise Rapoko, who then filed a police report.

Mashonaland Central deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Lucy Chigwenhese confirmed the incident.

“I can confirm a sudden death case that occurred on Tuesday at Maretekwa Village in Shamva, where an infant aged one year drowned,” Chigwenhese said.

Police urged parents and guardians not to leave infants in the care of minors.

“We urge parents and caregivers to ensure that infants and toddlers are never left in the custody of minors, and to always secure or empty buckets and other water containers after use. Close supervision of young children is essential to avoid preventable drowning incidents within households and communities,” she added.
