A 42-YEAR-OLD man from Mutoko has been sentenced to five years in jail for attempting to murder a man who stopped him from assaulting his girlfriend.
Tanaka Mupaso of Kugarahanya Village, under Chief Mutoko, will serve an effective four-year sentence after Mutoko Regional Magistrate Chiedza Gatsi suspended one year on condition of good behaviour.
The victim, 49-year-old Wellington Gonyeka, was drinking beer at Gwanza Business Centre on December 30, 2025, when Mupaso assaulted Gonyeka's girlfriend, Susan Mazarura. Gonyeka intervened, prompting Mupaso to attack him in anger.
Court papers reveal that Mupaso first struck Gonyeka on the right hand with an iron bar, then used an axe to hit him on the head. Gonyeka fell unconscious and was rushed to Mutoko District Hospital for treatment.
The State was represented by Nathan Majuru.
The case highlights the dangers of violent escalation and the judiciary's commitment to punishing attacks that endanger lives in the community.
