A woman from Rutenga in Masvingo Province narrowly survived a crocodile attack in the Mwenezi River on Saturday after a terrifying struggle that left her seriously injured.

Fungayi Chikamwe Maburuse had been travelling from Beitbridge to Mwenezi with her two young children when they stopped at the Mwenezi River Bridge along the Masvingo–Beitbridge Highway for sightseeing.

According to Masvingo Mirror, the crocodile suddenly lunged at Maburuse, grabbed her by the chest and dragged her into the water as her children screamed for help.

In a desperate bid to survive, she reportedly pinched the reptile's nose — a known sensitive spot — forcing it to briefly release her. However, the animal attacked again, biting her on the knee and pulling her back underwater.

Maburuse fought back using a stick to fend off the predator and managed to free herself before other crocodiles nearby could join the attack. She eventually made it out of the river alive.

She is currently receiving treatment at NORAZ Surgical Clinic in Masvingo, where doctors are attending to multiple serious injuries sustained during the ordeal.

The family has appealed for financial assistance to cover medical expenses, which are reportedly nearing US$2 000 due to extensive surgical procedures.

Authorities regularly warn members of the public to exercise extreme caution around Zimbabwe's rivers and water bodies, particularly in areas known to be inhabited by crocodiles.
