Uncle jailed 34 years for repeated sexual assaults and impregnating niece

A 34‑year‑old Mberengwa man has been sentenced to 34 years in prison by the Zvishavane Regional Magistrates’ Court after repeatedly sexually assaulting his 12‑year‑old niece, resulting in her falling pregnant.


The court heard that in April 2025, the offender targeted the girl, a Grade 7 pupil, over four separate nights while she slept alone in a kitchen hut. He would enter the room, remove her blankets and assault her. The victim was able to identify him each time using the light from a torch she kept switched on.

Deeply traumatised, the girl did not disclose the abuse. In May 2025, after missing her period, she informed the offender, who confirmed she was pregnant and gave her money to run away from home.

The matter came to light when the girl went missing and was later found at a homestead at Macadam Mine. During an interview, she revealed the abuse, leading to the offender’s arrest.

The court ordered the sentences for Counts 1 and 2 to run concurrently, and the sentences for Counts 3 and 4 to run concurrently, leaving the offender to serve an effective 34 years.

The sentence reflects the court’s strong condemnation of those who prey on children, particularly within the family unit where they should feel safest. The violation of minors is regarded as a grave offence that attracts severe punishment.
