21‑year‑old jailed 40 years for raping 81‑year‑old granny

The Bulawayo Regional Magistrates’ Court has sentenced 21‑year‑old Gift Ncube to an effective 40 years in prison after convicting him on two counts of rape.
The court heard that on 15 February, at around 3am, Ncube broke into the home of his 81‑year‑old neighbour in Hope Fountain. He overpowered the elderly woman, threatening to kill her while strangling her, before forcing her to undress and raping her in the sitting room.
He then dragged her to her bedroom, where he raped her a second time.
After the assaults, Ncube reportedly fell asleep in the victim’s bed. The elderly woman managed to escape and alert neighbours, who effected a citizen’s arrest after finding him naked and asleep. A broken window confirmed unlawful entry.
The court described the attack as a grave violation of a vulnerable senior citizen within the supposed safety of her own home.
