Nine commuter omnibus drivers and conductors have been arrested in a sweeping crackdown on reckless driving in Harare's Central Business District (CBD) after they were caught on camera mounting pavements and endangering pedestrians.
The suspects - Innocent Vera (31), Archford Dhlamini (34), Justice Mukucha (23), Isaac Danzvara (30), Moses Mandimutsira (17), Ashley Kandonga (30), Trymore Nyakabau (29), Liberty Kudzange (34) and Leo Zuze (34) - were taken into custody on Friday.
Authorities said the group was filmed driving onto pavements while attempting to evade police patrols, placing members of the public at serious risk. In one incident near an embassy office along Speke Avenue, clients were forced to take cover as a commuter omnibus sped past.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the arrests, stating that law enforcement officers have intensified operations across the city.
"We have deployed police officers on every street to tackle this menace," he said. "The drivers were captured on various CCTV cameras, which led to their identification and subsequent arrest."
Inspector Chakanza reiterated the police's zero-tolerance approach to reckless driving, warning that authorities will continue targeting operators whose actions endanger public safety.
The suspects are currently detained at Harare Central Police Station and are facing charges of reckless driving and endangering public safety.
