A 26‑year‑old Zvishavane man, Mthulisi Mangena, has been sentenced to an effective six years in prison by the Zvishavane Magistrates’ Court after he was convicted of attempted murder following a violent mob‑style attack that left a local shop assistant with permanent injuries.
The court heard that on 14 December 2025, around midnight, the victim was at a local nightclub sitting next to a woman who was accused of stealing a watch. Mangena allegedly dragged the woman outside, prompting the victim to follow to see what was happening.
When he approached the group, they turned on him, shouting “Ndiye umwe wacho” (“He is the other one”). The assault that followed was severe. The victim was struck on the back of the head with a beer bottle and, while on the ground, was kicked and beaten with a metal tool and stones.
The attackers robbed him of US$354 and his house keys. Mangena reportedly attempted to use an okapi knife but was stopped by another member of the mob.
The victim was then forced into a black Toyota Aqua, driven away and dumped unconscious along Escrow Way.
He sustained deep cuts to the forehead and head, lost three teeth, had another tooth broken, and suffered multiple bruises across his face and arms.
The court said violence of this nature - particularly involving dangerous weapons and coordinated group attacks in public spaces - would not be tolerated.
