Ex-CCC candidate wins election on Zanu PF ticket

Gift Konjana, a former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) candidate in the 2018 harmonised elections, has claimed victory in the Chegutu Ward 1 by-election under the Zanu PF banner after crossing the floor from CCC.

Konjana narrowly defeated CCC-aligned independent candidate Elisha Dausi, polling 367 votes to Dausi's 301. Charles Mirisau finished a distant third with nine votes.

Speaking after the results were announced, Konjana described the win as a validation of his standing in Chegutu.

"This confirms that I am, and have always been, a popular politician in Chegutu," he said.

In the 2018 harmonised elections, Konjana had contested under the CCC ticket but lost to Dexter Nduna, citing what he claimed was an error by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission. A ZEC official reportedly acknowledged the error but indicated that the result could not be reversed administratively and advised Konjana to pursue legal recourse — a matter that was never resolved, and Nduna served the full parliamentary term.

Frustrated with CCC leadership, Konjana joined Zanu PF last year and was nominated to contest the Ward 1 by-election.

The by-election was also marked by low voter turnout, with only 34.57% of registered voters participating, highlighting continued voter apathy in local polls.
