A 45-year-old man was arrested near the Mozambique border while allegedly attempting to flee the country after killing his 50-year-old wife.

Elliot Nyambira, of Masvingo, was apprehended following the death of his wife, Muchaneta Makuwaza.

Nyambira was arrested in Chimanimani as he allegedly tried to cross into Mozambique without travel documents.

According to police, officers acting on a tip-off intercepted the suspect at a roadblock near the border post. He was taken into custody and detained at Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Chimanimani.

The circumstances surrounding Makuwaza's death are still under investigation. A post-mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death.

Acting Manicaland police spokesperson Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the arrest and said the alleged murder occurred on February 16.

"He travelled overnight towards the eastern border, allegedly intending to cross into Mozambique through an illegal entry point," said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

"On February 17, ZRP Chimanimani received a tip-off that the accused, who was being sought in connection with a murder case that occurred in Masvingo the previous day, was on the run and heading towards the border.

"Police acted on the information and intercepted the suspect while he was trying to cross the border. He was arrested and taken to ZRP Chimanimani. He is expected to be transferred to Gutu for further investigations and court proceedings."

Police urged members of the public to resolve disputes peacefully and seek assistance from community leaders or law enforcement rather than resorting to violence.

"Domestic violence and murder are serious offences that attract heavy penalties," Chinyoka said.
