The Harare City Council on Monday deployed a joint team of Zimbabwe Republic Police traffic officers and municipal police in a targeted operation aimed at restoring order in the capital's central business district (CBD).

The early morning blitz followed reports that commuter omnibuses were using First Street Mall to evade arrest while illegally picking up and dropping off passengers.

The operation swept through key points in the city centre, including Market Square and major bus termini, as authorities intensified efforts to enforce municipal by-laws and reclaim public spaces from illegal transport operators.

Harare City Council Chamber Secretary Advocate Warren Chiwawa confirmed the joint deployment, describing it as part of routine but heightened enforcement measures designed to improve safety and restore order.

"We are targeting hotspots. It is true that we regularly embark on joint enforcement exercises between Harare Traffic and Harare Municipal Police so that we ensure that public safety is prioritised," he said.

The council has in recent weeks stepped up operations against errant kombi crews and illegal "mushikashika" operators, amid growing concerns over congestion, disorder and safety risks in the CBD.
