Mthuli Ncube, Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, has confirmed the appointment of Vimbai Chikwenhere as the new Auditor-General, following her nomination by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Presenting the matter to Parliament on Tuesday, Ncube highlighted that the Public Accounts Committee had commended the appointment. "Whereas section 310(1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe provides that the Auditor-General be appointed by the President with the approval of Parliament; and whereas the President has nominated Mrs Vimbai Chikwenhere for appointment as Auditor-General," he said. Ncube further added that the committee had thoroughly considered her nomination and endorsed her suitability for the role.

The Office of the Auditor-General had previously been led by Rheah Kujinga in an acting capacity following the retirement of Mildred Chiri in 2023. Ncube described Chikwenhere as well-qualified for the position, noting her professional experience and credentials.

"This individual, Mrs Vimbai Chikwenhere, is a chartered accountant and therefore appropriately qualified for the position at hand of Auditor-General. She has experience," Ncube said, highlighting her tenure at Ernst & Young Zimbabwe where she served in various roles within the audit profession.

The Office of the Auditor-General oversees audits of all government agencies, local authorities, and state-controlled entities, as mandated under section 309 of the Constitution and the Audit Office Act. Ncube's announcement now formally places Chikwenhere at the helm of the office, a critical institution in Zimbabwe's public financial management framework.
