Gift Konjana, former MDC Alliance candidate who recently won Chegutu Ward 1 on a Zanu PF ticket, has reportedly gone missing under unclear circumstances, according to his family. His eldest son, Hamandishe Konjana, confirmed the disappearance on Tuesday, stating that the family reported the matter to Pfupajena Police Station last week but has received no information on his father's whereabouts.

"Yes, my father is now a missing person. We reported the matter at Pfupajena Police last week and up to now his whereabouts are unknown. We are greatly worried as a family and have no clue where he could be," Hamandishe said, reiterating yesterday that his father remains unaccounted for.

Some local Zanu PF sources in Chegutu suggested that Konjana's disappearance could involve foul play, noting that his popularity and recent electoral victory may have unsettled certain party members. "Most members are of the view that it could be an inside job as his popularity and win appear to have unsettled certain individuals within the party in Chegutu," the source said.

Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Ian Kohwera referred media inquiries to national police spokesperson Paul Nyathi, who indicated he needed time to consult with provincial authorities before providing details. Zanu PF provincial chairperson Mary Mliswa-Chikoka was unavailable for comment.

Konjana narrowly defeated CCC-aligned independent candidate Elisha Dausi in the by-election, polling 367 votes to Dausi's 301. In the 2018 harmonised elections, he had contested as an MDC Alliance candidate but lost controversially to Zanu PF's Dexter Nduna. At that time, Konjana alleged that he had been "robbed" of victory due to an error by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, a discrepancy that the commission acknowledged but advised him to challenge through legal channels. The matter was not resolved in court, and Nduna served a full parliamentary term.

The sudden disappearance of Konjana has raised concern among political observers and local residents, who are awaiting further clarification from law enforcement on his status.
