A 25-year-old woman from Kezi has appeared in court after a 15-month-old child sustained serious burns when she allegedly left the infant unattended near a bucket of boiling water.

Eleonora Moyo appeared before Patience Madondo at the Bulawayo Magistrates' Court facing a charge of ill-treatment of children and young persons. She pleaded guilty and was remanded in custody until today.

Prosecutor Joseph Rugara told the court that the incident occurred on February 23 at around 2PM.

According to the State, Moyo allegedly left a bucket of hot water inside a room where the infant was playing before stepping outside.

During her absence, the toddler reportedly placed her left leg inside the bucket containing boiling water and suffered burns.

The court heard that when Moyo returned, she found the infant injured and crying in pain. Instead of immediately seeking medical attention, she allegedly strapped the child to her back until the infant fell asleep.

Moyo later informed the child's mother, who had been away at the time. The mother reportedly rushed the infant to hospital for treatment before reporting the matter to police, leading to Moyo's arrest.

The case has been postponed as the court continues to assess the circumstances surrounding the incident.
