Well-known religious leader Simabvu Shiri (37), founder of the Spring of Living Waters Church, has been remanded in prison for allegedly assaulting his pregnant wife, Trishia Samantha Maphosa (28), who went into premature labour a few days later. Tragically, the baby died within hours of birth.

The incident occurred last Sunday, with Shiri arrested on Thursday at his home in Mbizo 4, Kwekwe. He appeared in court on Friday for initial remand, and his trial is scheduled to begin next Wednesday.

Midlands Police spokesperson Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the arrest, noting that Shiri has a prior history of violence. In 2024, he was sentenced to 12 months in jail for assaulting congregants.

"The complainant, who was eight months pregnant, reported that she was physically assaulted by her husband, who also threatened to kill her and her unborn baby," Inspector Mahoko said.

Maphosa was admitted to a local hospital following the assault and delivered prematurely. The newborn tragically passed away the following day.

Shiri faces charges related to assault and threats against his wife and unborn child as the legal process moves forward.
