A man from Bulawayo has been fined for contempt of court after he allegedly violated a peace order and verbally abused his neighbour while insulting the court that issued the order.

Mxolisi Ndlovu appeared before the Bulawayo Magistrates Court facing charges stemming from an incident in which he reportedly urinated on his neighbour's doorstep before shouting offensive insults in isiNdebele.

The insults, according to the court, were directed at both the peace order and the magistrate who granted it.

Prosecutors told the court that on February 22, Ndlovu breached a peace order that barred him from verbally abusing or disturbing the peace of his neighbour, Orpheus Sibanda.

By disregarding the order and using abusive language, the court heard, the accused undermined the dignity, authority and reputation of the judiciary.

After hearing the matter, the court found Ndlovu guilty and fined him US$200 or four months in prison if he fails to pay.

The magistrate also handed down an additional two-month prison sentence, which was suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during that period.
