Zimbabwe's oldest football rivalry is back, and Highlanders FC and Dynamos FC are ready to set Rufaro Stadium alight this Sunday in what promises to be a fiery clash both on the pitch and along the touchlines.
The two sides last met in the Jairos Jiri Charity Shield at Barbourfields Stadium, where Highlanders narrowly edged Dynamos 1-0 in a tense encounter that offered both coaches a tactical blueprint for the league fixture. That victory settled pre-season bragging rights, but league points now add another layer of intensity.
Dynamos, under coach Genesis Mangombe, arrive in Harare buoyed by a 2-1 win over TelOne, while Highlanders coach Benjani Mwaruwari takes his side fresh from a draw with Bulawayo Chiefs.
Mwaruwari says the Charity Shield encounter provided insight into Dynamos' strengths, especially their pace and wing play, which his squad has been working to counter.
"I know I am part of this big Highlanders family and playing against Dynamos is motivation in itself, especially for me, the fans and everyone connected to the club," Mwaruwari said. "We played them a couple of weeks ago, and we saw how they play. Even though we won, they have dangerous wingers, so we've been preparing to neutralise that threat."
The former Zimbabwe international added that Highlanders are still adjusting combinations early in the season, a balancing act between experimentation and securing points.
Mangombe, looking to avenge the Charity Shield loss, said Dynamos have addressed past mistakes and now have more players registered, increasing competition and squad depth.
"It's a big game and this time we are playing at home," he said. "We played Highlanders two weeks back and we have corrected our mistakes. The game motivates itself — it's Dynamos against Highlanders and everyone knows what that means."
With passion, emotion, and history at stake, Rufaro Stadium is expected to be packed as fans from both sides create the electric atmosphere that has defined this legendary rivalry for decades.
