A 31-year-old man from Nkayi has been remanded in custody after appearing before the Plumtree Magistrates' Court facing charges of stealing a generator battery.
The accused, Njabulo Ncube of Nyeve village under Chief Skobokobo's jurisdiction, is alleged to have stolen a 12V Taurus battery valued at about US$200, which was later recovered.
Presiding magistrate Joshua Nembaware remanded Ncube in custody pending trial.
The complainant, Caline Moyo (57), is employed as a security guard at Redwood Ultra City in Figtree.
Prosecutor Shiela Nyathi told the court that on the morning of March 1, Ncube allegedly entered the garage area at Redwood Ultra City and detached the battery from a generator before attempting to leave with it.
The court heard that Moyo, who was on duty at the time, saw the suspect and alerted her colleague, Bothwell Tshuma. Upon realising he had been spotted, Ncube allegedly dropped the battery behind a bar located about 50 metres from the garage and attempted to flee.
The two security guards reportedly chased after the suspect, apprehended him and handed him over to police. The recovered battery was returned as evidence in the case.
