The so‑called "Third Republic" narrative is gaining traction after a section of the ruling Zanu PF launched a social media campaign opposing Constitutional Amendment No. 3, which seeks, among other provisions, to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa's term to 2030.
While pro‑amendment groups within Zanu PF are conducting nationwide mobilisation urging citizens to support the Bill, another faction has begun openly campaigning against it, arguing that the Constitution must be defended.
Posting through a Facebook page titled Zanu PF Family, the anti‑amendment group accused supporters of the Bill of pushing a selfish agenda designed to benefit a small clique.
"These amendments are pushed only by those who want to benefit from selfish one‑man leadership in the country," the group wrote.
"We are at the forefront of opposing Vision 2030 because it fails to serve the interests of the majority of Zimbabweans. Proponents of this agenda are primarily those who stand to gain from it."
The group said it is working to "enlighten the public" on the importance of protecting the Constitution, adding that it is collaborating with like‑minded individuals inside Zanu PF who also reject Amendment Bill No. 3.
"Our counsel is to refrain from backing an individual whose influence is waning; instead, lend your support to the Third Republic," the post added.
