A 26-year-old driver operating on the inDrive platform was left stranded after a passenger allegedly stole his vehicle in Chitungwiza.

Gerald Chitonho had picked up the passenger at Chikwanha Shopping Centre, where the man indicated he was travelling to Makoni Shopping Centre.

According to reports, the situation took a turn when they reached Unit B, where the passenger requested to be driven into a residential area. Upon stopping along an unnamed road, the passenger allegedly asked Chitonho to step out of the vehicle and knock on a nearby gate, claiming his girlfriend lived there.

Unaware of any danger, Chitonho complied and left the engine running. Moments later, the passenger reportedly jumped into the driver's seat and sped off, leaving him stranded.

The stolen vehicle, a Honda Fit, also contained the driver's personal belongings, including his wallet with a driver's licence and national registration card.

Luckmore Chakanza, spokesperson for Zimbabwe Republic Police in Harare province, confirmed the incident.

"Police are investigating a theft of a motor vehicle in Chitungwiza. In the motor vehicle was the complainant's wallet, containing a driver's licence and national registration card, and the total value stolen is US$8,000," said Insp Chakanza.

Authorities have urged drivers, particularly those in the ride-hailing sector, to exercise caution and avoid leaving vehicles unattended or running in the presence of passengers.
