A tragic accident occurred on Monday afternoon at Chikombedzi Crossing along the Mwenezi River after a vehicle carrying five passengers was swept away by strong floodwaters while attempting to cross a submerged bridge.

Police confirmed the incident took place around 4pm following heavy rains that caused the river to swell and overflow its banks.

The vehicle, a Toyota D4D, is registered to Chief Mpapa (born Hanyani Zava), who was installed as traditional leader in August 2023. At the time of the حادث, it was being driven by the Chief's son as the group travelled towards Masukwe.

Witnesses said the driver attempted to cross the bridge despite it being visibly submerged under fast-moving water. As the vehicle entered the crossing, it was quickly overwhelmed by the ուժ of the current and swept downstream.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes, with some passengers struggling to escape from the vehicle in the rushing المياه. While a number of occupants managed to survive, an elderly man identified as Makusha from Pfumari Village reportedly died during the incident.

Rescue efforts were hampered by the قوة of the جریان, with reports indicating that the victim's body was carried away by the river before it could be recovered.

Authorities have once again urged members of the public to avoid crossing flooded rivers or submerged bridges, warning that even shallow-looking water can conceal dangerous currents capable of sweeping away vehicles.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and further details are expected once families and officials provide confirmation.
