Businessman Wicknell Chivayo has pledged a combined financial and material support package worth approximately US$130 000 to Ronald Mujuru, whose wife and five children died in a road traffic accident over the Easter holidays.

The tragedy, which claimed six members of the same family, has triggered widespread mourning across Zimbabwe, with many describing it as one of the most devastating recent road accidents.

Chivayo said he would provide Mujuru with US$50 000 in cash as well as a brand new 2026 Toyota Fortuner valued at about US$80 000. He said the assistance was intended to help Mujuru begin rebuilding his life following what he described as an "unimaginable loss."

He reportedly directed Mujuru to collect the vehicle from Exquisite Car Dealership and framed the gesture as a traditional act of condolence rooted in African cultural practices of support during bereavement, commonly referred to as chema.

The donation comes amid a broader wave of public sympathy for the surviving father, with several public figures also extending condolences and emotional support. Among them is First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, who has visited and comforted the bereaved family.

While the financial assistance may provide some relief, the incident has also renewed attention on road safety concerns in Zimbabwe, particularly during peak travel periods such as public holidays, when fatal accidents remain a recurring challenge.

Authorities have continued to urge motorists to exercise caution on the roads as the country grapples with high levels of road traffic fatalities that have long-lasting social and economic impacts on families and communities.
