A 38‑year‑old man from Southlea Park in Harare has been sentenced to an effective nine months in prison after assaulting his girlfriend during a dispute over HIV transmission.

The Mbare Magistrates' Court convicted him of physical abuse and handed down a 12‑month sentence. Three months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour, leaving nine months to serve.

The court heard that on 8 March 2026 at around 1000 hours, the offender repeatedly punched his 31‑year‑old girlfriend in the face at the Southlea Park shops. The assault occurred after the victim asked him why he had infected her with HIV.

The woman was referred for medical examination following the attack, and the medical report was submitted as evidence during the trial.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe reiterated that physical abuse is a serious crime regardless of circumstances.

"The NPAZ will leave no stone unturned in ensuring perpetrators are brought to book and face the full wrath of the law," the authority stated.

Support services for survivors of gender‑based violence are available through the Adult Rape Clinic, Musasa Project and the ZRP Victim Friendly Unit.
