A man from Gutu has been hospitalised after allegedly attempting to take his own life following a dispute over a traditional leadership appointment.

Njodzi Zhambe, a younger brother to the late headman Mawere, Kabias Chityatya, is currently receiving treatment at Gutu Mission Hospital after reportedly ingesting pesticide. Sources say the incident occurred after Zhambe failed to secure appointment as acting headman.

According to local sources, tensions arose during a selection meeting held on April 9, 2026, at Mawere Township, where family and community members gathered to determine a successor. The position was ultimately given to the late headman's eldest son, Kabias Chityatya (junior).

Gutu District Development Coordinator, Chiedza Tafirei, confirmed that the meeting took place and that Chityatya (junior) was selected in line with customary practice.

"Traditionally, the deceased's eldest son assumes the position, and in this case, Kabias Chityatya was selected as acting headman Mawere," said Tafirei, adding that she was not aware of Zhambe's alleged suicide attempt.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa, said the matter had not been officially reported to the police.

Efforts to obtain a comment from Chief Gutu were unsuccessful as his mobile phone was unreachable.

Zhambe's condition has not been officially disclosed.
