The family of a Zimbabwean woman shot dead in Hillbrow has appealed for restraint and accuracy in reporting her death, saying false information circulating on social media is deepening their grief.

The woman, identified as Tabeth Chidziva, was killed on the spot during a shooting incident on Sunday morning in Johannesburg.

Speaking to Southern Eye, family representative Malvin Chidziva said misleading online narratives have caused unnecessary distress as the family struggles to come to terms with the loss.

He provided an account of the events leading up to the shooting, explaining that the deceased had been assisting her pregnant daughter, Supulansa Chidziva (25), who sells fast food in the area.

According to Chidziva, the incident began when Supulansa went into their residential building to pack up for the day and encountered a man who allegedly touched her stomach inappropriately, making her uncomfortable.

"She took her belongings into the building where they live. While inside, she encountered a man who touched her stomach, making her uncomfortable," he said.

An argument reportedly followed after Supulansa confronted the man, prompting her mother to intervene. The situation escalated when the suspect allegedly threatened to shoot.

"Shortly afterwards, the man pulled out a gun and fatally shot her," Chidziva said.

The family has urged the public and social media users to avoid spreading unverified claims and instead allow space for accurate reporting and justice to take its course.

As they mourn, the family said the focus should remain on accountability and respect for the deceased.

Chidziva's body has since been repatriated to Zimbabwe and is expected to be buried in Harare.
