The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has removed 6 284 deceased persons from the national voters' roll in accordance with provisions of the Electoral Act.

The list of names was published under General Notice 609 of 2026 in an Extraordinary Government Gazette issued on Friday by ZEC chief elections officer Simbarashe Tongai.

The commission said the removals were carried out after voter registration officers established that the individuals concerned had died.

"It is hereby notified, in terms of Section 33(4) as read with Section 27(1) of the Electoral Act, that voter registration officers have reason to believe that the persons whose names are listed… have died," Tongai said.

He added that the names will be struck off the roll unless objections are lodged within the stipulated period.

Under the notice, any living voter who may have been incorrectly included has seven days from the date of publication to file an appeal with ZEC headquarters in Harare or at provincial offices.

The exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to clean up the voters' roll ahead of future electoral processes, which authorities say is aimed at improving accuracy and credibility in voter registration records.

The announcement comes amid continued scrutiny of voter roll management in Zimbabwe, with stakeholders repeatedly calling for regular audits to ensure transparency and public confidence in the electoral system.
