South African media is awash with news that three members of a Zimbabwean family died in a tragic sequence of road accidents near Bela-Bela, with South African authorities confirming that both incidents involved vehicles driven by members of the South African Police Service.

According to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, the tragedy began on Saturday when a Zimbabwean man was allegedly struck and killed by a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer while crossing the N1 highway after escorting his wife and children to a bus station.

The family's 14-year-old child reportedly witnessed the fatal accident and alerted the mother, who rushed back toward the scene carrying another young child strapped to her back.

Police said the mother and child were then struck by another vehicle linked to Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi. Authorities confirmed that the vehicle was being driven by a member of the Protection Security Services assigned to the minister.

Both the mother and the child died at the scene.

Mathe said Minister Motsoaledi, his close protection officer and the driver stopped immediately after the collision and remained at the scene until emergency and police personnel arrived.

The surviving 14-year-old child reportedly sustained serious trauma and possible injuries after witnessing both incidents.

Police have opened two separate culpable homicide investigations, while the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has taken over the matter because both drivers involved are SAPS members.
