Four suspected armed robbers broke into N. Richards Wholesalers at Chivi Growth Point around 4am, tying up a security guard before blowing open a safe belonging to Mukuru Financial Services and escaping with US$31 000 and ZAR 111 000 in cash.
According to sources, the gang also attempted to break into another safe belonging to N. Richards but failed. The robbers reportedly used explosives to force open the Mukuru safe after overpowering and restraining Fawcett Security guard Taurai Chikuni with ropes.
No injuries were reported during the raid.
Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dewa said he had not yet been formally briefed on the incident at the time of publication.
The matter is being investigated by ZRP Chivi under RRB number 6739843.
The Chivi robbery comes just days after a similar heist in Murambinda, where four armed suspects allegedly drilled through a wall into a bank vault and stole over US$9 800 and ZiG152 190, raising concerns about increasingly coordinated methods used in rural armed robberies.
