A security company cashier has appeared in court in Harare facing allegations of stealing US$48 000 after reportedly tampering with sealed cash bricks destined for a microfinance institution.

Bruce Kanavheti (32), employed by Wellock Security Private Limited, appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo on charges of theft of trust property. He was not asked to plead.

The court heard that Kanavheti was working as a cash booker responsible for receiving, counting and sealing money collected by cash-in-transit teams before dispatch.

Prosecutors alleged that on May 11, 2026, he received US$100 000 at the company's offices in Chisipite, Harare, which was destined for Innbucks Microbank in Northridge.

It is alleged that he tampered with four sealed cash bricks, each containing US$25 000, by removing bundles of US$50 notes from the middle and replacing them with US$10 notes.

The State further alleges that he stole a total of US$48 000, taking US$12 000 from each cash brick before resealing the packages and handing them over for delivery.

According to the prosecution, the discrepancy was discovered on May 13 when Innbucks Microbank reportedly alerted the security company after detecting irregularities in the sealed consignments.

The matter is still before the courts as investigations continue.
