An 18-year-old man under Chief Njelele's area has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of raping his 42-year-old aunt, in a case that has drawn strong condemnation from prosecutors.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the incident occurred on May 16, 2026, when the two were walking to a nearby village for casual work.
The court heard that the accused suddenly turned on the victim along the way, violently assaulting her before carrying out the attack.
"Along the way, the offender turned to the victim, grabbing her by the neck and tripping her to the ground. The victim fell on her back and fought back bravely, but she was ultimately overpowered by the offender, who forcibly undressed her and raped her," the NPAZ said in a statement.
The attack was interrupted when a passerby reportedly heard distress calls from a nearby bush and rushed to the scene.
"The passerby rushed to the scene and caught the offender in the act," the prosecution said.
The witness assisted the victim, helping her to dress before escorting her back home, after which the matter was reported to police.
The offender was arrested shortly thereafter and brought before the courts, where he was convicted and sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment.
Authorities say the case highlights ongoing concerns about sexual violence in rural communities and the importance of community vigilance in preventing and reporting such crimes.
