Zanu PF Mutasa Central legislator Innocent Benza has been elected the party's Manicaland provincial vice chairman after winning a closely contested vote during a provincial executive committee meeting held in Mutare.

Benza secured the influential post after polling 23 votes against 17 received by rival candidate Judith Shadaya during Thursday's election.

A total of 40 members of the provincial executive committee participated in the vote, which was convened to fill the vacant position in the party's provincial leadership structure.

Confirming the outcome, Zanu PF Manicaland provincial spokesperson Phillip Guyo said the election process had been conducted smoothly and in accordance with party procedures.

"We have just finished our provincial executive committee meeting, and Benza garnered 23 votes against 17 for Judith Shadaya," Guyo said.

"The meeting went on well, and we are very happy as a province with the manner in which we conducted our proceedings."

Before his election, Benza served as the party's provincial secretary for legal affairs and has been an active figure within the province's political structures.

In his new role, he will deputise Manicaland provincial chairman Tawanda Mukodza and become part of the province's top leadership team responsible for coordinating party activities and implementing national programmes at provincial level.

The vice chairmanship position had been occupied in an acting capacity by Linda Matatu, who serves as chairperson of the provincial war veterans league.

The election comes as Zanu PF continues to strengthen its provincial structures ahead of key party programmes and mobilisation activities.

Meanwhile, the party's provincial inter-district conference is scheduled to take place on Saturday at Mutare Teachers' College, where party members from across Manicaland are expected to gather to discuss organisational and developmental issues affecting the province.

The conference is anticipated to provide an opportunity for the newly elected vice chairman to formally engage with district leaders and party structures across the province in his new capacity.
