4 declared National Heroes

Four liberation struggle stalwarts have been posthumously declared National Heroes ahead of this year's Heroes Day commemorations, bringing the total number of national heroes and heroines recognised by Zimbabwe to 254.

Announcing the decision during a post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Jenfan Muswere said the government had conferred National Hero status on Petros Khumalo, Shumirai Wekwete, Joseph Zethi Dube and Herbert Zaba Sambo.

The recognition comes as preparations gather momentum for the country's annual national commemorations honouring those who contributed to Zimbabwe's liberation struggle and nation-building efforts.

Government said the latest declarations increase the number of recognised national heroes and heroines to 254 since independence.

The announcement was made as Cabinet also unveiled the programme for this year's national commemorations.

According to the government, Heroes Day will be observed on Monday, August 10, under the theme "Lest We Forget."

The main national event will be held at National Heroes Acre, where thousands of Zimbabweans are expected to gather to honour the country's fallen heroes and heroines.

Defence Forces Day will be commemorated the following day, Tuesday, August 11, in recognition of the role played by the country's security services in safeguarding national sovereignty and supporting development.

Meanwhile, National Youth Day is scheduled for Friday, August 21, with celebrations expected to focus on the contribution of young people to national development and the preservation of the values of the liberation struggle.

The declaration of national hero status remains one of Zimbabwe's highest national honours and is reserved for individuals considered to have made exceptional contributions to the liberation struggle, national development or public service.

This year's commemorations are expected to place renewed emphasis on preserving the memory of the liberation struggle and recognising the sacrifices made by those who fought for the country's independence.
