A 52‑year‑old Mutoko man has been jailed for 30 months after he was convicted of cultivating cannabis at his homestead.

Michael Chibanda of Mudiwakure village was sentenced by Mutoko magistrate Caroline Matanga, who suspended one year on condition of good behaviour.

Prosecutor Ray Tsikayi told the court that on 18 May, police acted on a tip‑off and confronted Chibanda at his homestead. Officers ordered him to accompany them to his garden, where they found 12 dagga plants under cultivation.

He was instructed to uproot the plants before being arrested.

In court, Chibanda claimed he did not know the plants were cannabis, but the State proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

He was convicted under Zimbabwe's laws governing dangerous drug cultivation.
