AFC bank teller steals US$54k, attempts suicide

An AFC Bindura branch bank teller, Irvine Munoriarwa, has been arrested after allegedly stealing US$54,510 from the bank and later attempting suicide when he realised he was under investigation.

Munoriarwa appeared before a Bindura magistrate on Thursday and was remanded in custody.

State prosecutor Carson Kundiona told the court that on 17 June, CCTV footage captured Munoriarwa taking a bundle of cash and placing it in his pocket instead of the vault.

Investigations revealed he had taken US$20,030 in physical cash. Further checks uncovered US$34,480 in bank transfers and EcoCash transactions allegedly made into his own accounts and those of relatives over a three‑month period.

Indications are that he misappropriated the funds to finance betting activities.

The court heard that Munoriarwa attempted to take his life by drinking an unknown substance after learning he was under police investigation. He was remanded in custody while admitted at Shashi Hospital.

He will return to court on charges linked to financial fraud and theft of trust property.
