'Possessed' father attempts to rape daughter

A 35‑year‑old Bulawayo man has been jailed for 15 years after he attempted to rape his 14‑year‑old daughter, claiming in court that he was "possessed" when he committed the offence.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the minor, appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Shingirai Mutiro, who sentenced him following his guilty plea.
"Your worship, I do not know what got into me. I was possessed. Please forgive me," he told the court during his plea.
The court heard that on 16 May, at around 10pm, the father was seated with his three children on blankets in the kitchen hut, watching a movie on his mobile phone. Two of the children fell asleep, and the complainant joined her siblings under the blankets.
The father allegedly removed his trousers, forcibly pulled off the minor's skin‑tight trousers and covered her mouth with his hand to stop her from screaming.
As he attempted to rape her, his wife entered the room and caught him with his trousers down.
A police report was filed, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction under Zimbabwe's sexual offences laws.
