Former Mvurwi Town Council worker Sydney Chihombe, who had been on the run for the past five years over an alleged stands scam, has been arrested.
Authorities say he was apprehended over the weekend while attempting to board a plane in neighbouring South Africa.
“We arrested him and took him to Mvurwi Police Station where investigations are underway,” a source said.
Allegations are that on 3 October 2018, Mvurwi Town Council held a full council meeting and resolved to suspend the selling of stands.
Between 10 October 2018 and June 2020, Chihombe allegedly hatched a plan to defraud the council. He reportedly targeted desperate home‑seekers in Mvurwi and misrepresented to 32 people that he was selling residential stands.
He allegedly generated fake receipts and defrauded them of US$18,795,956.
Chihombe is now expected to face charges linked to fraud and criminal abuse of office under Zimbabwe’s anti‑corruption laws.
