‘Epworth’s balancing rocks set for tourism boost,’ Tawengwa

EPWORTH — Government has moved to position Epworth’s iconic balancing rocks as a major tourism attraction, with Senator Charles Tawengwa, Minister of State for Harare Provincial Affairs and Devolution, announcing on Sunday that preparations to ensure the site contributes meaningfully to Zimbabwe’s tourism sector have gathered momentum.


Tawengwa made the announcement during Constitution Amendment Act No. 3 celebrations held in Epworth, attended by thousands of residents and Zanu‑PF supporters.

“Preparations to make sure Epworth’s balancing rocks heavily contribute towards the country’s tourism sector have gained momentum,” Tawengwa told the gathering.

He said the development of the site must directly benefit local residents. “We are making sure that as we develop this tourism product, the people of Epworth also benefit directly from it. Tourism must not pass Epworth by. The jobs, the income, the opportunities must remain here with our people,” he added.

The Minister said plans underway include improved road access to the rock formations, visitor facilities, sanitation, and the training of local tour guides and vendors. He added that the Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs office is working with the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, local authorities and community groups to package Epworth as a day‑trip destination for both domestic and international tourists.

Epworth’s balancing rocks — massive granite formations perched dramatically on the outskirts of Harare — have long attracted photographers and hikers but remain largely undeveloped as a formal tourism product.

Tawengwa said leveraging the site would help diversify Harare Province’s tourism offerings beyond the city centre and create livelihoods for Epworth residents through crafts, food services and cultural experiences. “This is about inclusive tourism,” he said. “We want a situation where a tourist comes to see the balancing rocks and also buys from our mothers, eats in our community, and leaves money in Epworth.”

Tourism stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, noting that Epworth’s proximity to Harare makes it an easy addition to existing city tours and conferencing itineraries.

The Government push comes as Zimbabwe targets increased domestic and regional tourism under the National Tourism Recovery and Growth Strategy, with a focus on developing new community‑based attractions and expanding local tourism products.
