US-based firm announces plans for Zimbabwe T20 League

US-BASED sports and media company Flash Sports & Media has unveiled plans for a professional franchise T20 cricket competition in Zimbabwe, with the proposed Zimbabwe T20 League (ZT20) tentatively scheduled to launch in October or November 2026.

The proposed league is being developed in collaboration with Zimbabwe Cricket and would mark a significant new commercial venture for the country's cricket industry.

Flash Sports & Media, which is listed on Nasdaq under the ticker FLZH, said the ZT20 forms part of its broader strategy to develop and commercialise T20 cricket properties in emerging markets.

The company is incorporated in Delaware, with its corporate headquarters in Tampa, Florida, and operates internationally across several markets.

Its cricket portfolio includes involvement in the Lanka Premier League as well as plans to establish new franchise competitions in Malaysia, Singapore and Zimbabwe.

The proposed Zimbabwe league would be developed and commercialised through Flash Sports & Media subsidiary Innovative Production Group FZ, LLC (IPG), in partnership with Zimbabwe Cricket.

The project remains subject to definitive agreements, regulatory approvals and other conditions.

Victoria Falls is being considered as the venue for the league's opening ceremony, with matches expected to be staged at Harare Sports Club and in Bulawayo.

Organisers are positioning the tournament as both a sporting and tourism initiative, with Victoria Falls expected to provide an international backdrop for the launch.

Anil Mohan, founder of The IPG Group, said Zimbabwe had several advantages that could support the development of a successful franchise T20 competition.

"Zimbabwe has many of the ingredients required to become a major T20 cricket destination – passionate fans, strong local talent, iconic venues, and global tourism appeal," Mohan said.

"With Victoria Falls currently planned as the launch venue, this proposed league is intended to promote cricket while also supporting Zimbabwe's profile on the global sports and tourism map."

The proposed competition would adopt a franchise-based format and is expected to feature Zimbabwean players alongside international cricketers from established T20 markets.

However, no players have been confirmed at this stage.

Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Givemore Makoni said the proposed league could provide local players with valuable exposure to international talent while creating new commercial opportunities.

"This proposed league has the potential to provide a valuable platform for Zimbabwean players to compete with top international talent and create new opportunities for cricket development, commercial growth, and fan engagement across the country," Makoni said.

The organisers are also targeting revenue opportunities through media rights, sponsorships, franchise partnerships, hospitality, licensing and merchandise.

Flash Sports & Media said it intends to pursue global broadcast and digital distribution, targeting audiences across Africa, Asia, North America, Europe and the Middle East.

If successfully launched, ZT20 would add another professional franchise T20 property to Zimbabwe's cricket landscape while giving Flash Sports & Media an entry point into the African sports market.

The company said the competition would combine elite cricket with media distribution, sponsorship, franchise investment and international fan engagement.

However, the proposed October-November 2026 launch remains tentative.

The league is still dependent on definitive documentation, regulatory and other approvals, venue availability, player availability, financing and the conclusion of commercial agreements.

Flash Sports & Media has also cautioned that there is no guarantee the tournament will launch on the proposed timeline or that prospective franchise, player, venue, media and commercial agreements will ultimately be completed.

For Zimbabwean cricket, the proposal nevertheless represents a potentially significant opportunity to attract new investment, expose local players to international competition and leverage the country's sporting and tourism assets to build a commercially sustainable T20 product.
