Zimbabwe is introducing a QR-code product verification system to combat counterfeit goods, through a partnership between Buy Zimbabwe and local technology firm Owana Lost and Found.
Consumers will be able to scan QR codes embedded in the Buy Zimbabwe insignia to verify products and access details such as the manufacturer, product name, weight and expiry date.
Buy Zimbabwe chairman Munyaradzi Hwengwere said counterfeiting costs Zimbabwe an estimated US$1.2 billion and more than 20,000 jobs annually, while fake food, chemicals and other products also pose serious health risks.
Owana said the system has multiple security features designed to make replication difficult and will generate data that can help manufacturers identify suspicious activity and track their products.
The initiative will also introduce External Brand Inspectors to help companies monitor their products in foreign markets.
Stakeholders say technology, stronger enforcement and greater consumer awareness will be essential in tackling Zimbabwe's increasingly sophisticated counterfeit trade.
