Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has introduced a new 079 mobile number range as its existing 077 and 078 prefixes approach exhaustion, reflecting sustained growth in demand for mobile connectivity and digital services.

The new SIM cards are already available at Econet shops and authorised channel partners across the country.

"We are growing – and we want our customers to grow with us. The introduction of the new number range reflects that growth as well as our commitment to ensuring that more Zimbabweans from more places around the country can connect, communicate and participate in the digital economy," the company said in a statement.

Econet has traditionally operated within the 077 and 078 numbering ranges, which have now reached capacity as demand for its services has continued to increase.

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) reported that Econet had close to 13 million active subscribers in the first quarter, while market estimates put the company's broader connected customer base at around 16 million.

The additional numbering capacity comes as Econet continues to invest heavily in its network to meet growing demand, particularly for mobile data.

The company has committed more than US$200 million towards strengthening its network infrastructure, including expanding 4G and 5G capacity. The investment builds on years of spending aimed at improving network coverage and capacity as consumer usage has increasingly shifted from traditional voice services to data-driven applications.

Demand is also being supported by Econet's expanding portfolio of services, which includes mobile connectivity, digital financial services, business solutions and entertainment.

"By making additional numbers available, we are allowing more people to participate in a digitally connected future that leaves no one behind," Econet said.

Customers can choose their preferred numbers from the new 079 range, subject to availability.

The introduction of the new prefix provides Econet with additional numbering capacity as it seeks to accommodate continued subscriber growth and the increasing use of mobile and digital services across Zimbabwe.
