Chiwenga set for China

Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga is expected in China tomorrow for a working visit aimed at attracting investment into value addition as Zimbabwe intensifies efforts to build a sustainable upper-middle-income economy.
The visit comes as the Government seeks to leverage gains in primary production and the extractive sector by encouraging greater local processing and beneficiation.
Zimbabwe's Ambassador to China, Abigail Shoniwa, confirmed the Vice-President's itinerary, saying his programme would include participation at the 2026 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFITS), the Xiongan Digital Trade Innovation and Development Conference and engagements with prospective investors in Zhejiang Province.
"We are expecting the Vice President to arrive in China on a working visit on Tuesday. He is leading a delegation that includes the business community from Zimbabwe," Shoniwa said.
She said Chiwenga would first attend the 13th China International Fair for Trade in Services, CIFITS 2026, before travelling to Xiongan in Beijing, where he is expected to address a conference on digital trade innovation and development.
The Vice-President will then travel to Zhejiang Province, visiting Wenzhou and Hangzhou for company tours and business engagements.
"He will also address the Zim-China Business Forum in Hangzhou," Shoniwa said.
The ambassador said Chiwenga was also expected to meet Chinese Government officials during the visit, alongside his engagements with the private sector.
CIFITS 2026 is expected to attract participants from at least 90 countries, with organisers anticipating up to 250,000 delegates.
Zimbabwe is among the countries participating at the trade fair, which provides an opportunity for the country to showcase investment opportunities and deepen economic ties with China.
The visit is expected to place particular emphasis on attracting investment that can support value addition, industrialisation and the expansion of Zimbabwe's productive capacity.
