Teacher fired over student pregnancy

A mathematics teacher at Jiti High School in Shamva has been dismissed following allegations that he impregnated a Form Three learner, with school authorities saying he had previously faced concerns over inappropriate relationships with students.
The teacher, identified only as Mr Vurayayi, was dismissed for alleged misconduct after the matter was raised by parents and guardians.
Jiti High School headmaster, Mr Banda, confirmed the dismissal, saying the school had also received a separate report involving the teacher and another learner.
"The school fired the teacher," Banda said.
"He was a student teacher and there had also been another reported case of immorality involving a different learner."
Banda said the matter had been communicated to members of the school development committee, adding that the institution did not tolerate indiscipline among staff or learners.
"We have communicated this to members of the school development committee," he said.
"The school has taken action and we do not tolerate any indiscipline by both staff members and learners."
The teacher's dismissal became a major talking point among parents who gathered in Harare yesterday as learners returned to school for the Third Term.
One parent questioned how a teacher entrusted with the care and education of learners could allegedly engage in an inappropriate relationship with a student.
"Your teacher impregnated a student when he is supposed to protect and teach our children," the parent said.
"The school should be responsible and safeguard learners while they are in your care."
Parents also raised concerns over increased transport charges for learners travelling between Harare and Shamva.
One parent said they were being asked to pay US$12 for transport using ZUPCO buses, in addition to a separate US$30 payment.
"You are demanding US$12 to transport our children from Harare to Shamva using ZUPCO, which we believe is cheaper than other buses," the parent said.
"Apart from that money, you are also asking for US$30.
"We are aware this US$30 is for extra lessons, which should be clearly explained."
The concerns come as schools begin the Third Term, with parents calling for greater accountability over learner welfare and school-related charges.
