UK fugitive Ndodana Tshuma has pleaded guilty to charges of possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as contravening South Africa's Immigration Act.
Tshuma appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court today, where a plea and sentence agreement reached between him and the State is being considered.
The 45-year-old was arrested in Kensington, Johannesburg, where he was allegedly found in possession of the firearm and ammunition after fleeing the United Kingdom.
Tshuma is wanted in the UK in connection with the alleged murders of his wife and two daughters in Bedfordshire in July.
His guilty plea to the South African charges clears a key hurdle for extradition proceedings to get underway.
However, Tshuma's lawyer, Chrispen Machingura, said it was unlikely that details of his client's intended plea to the murder charges in the UK would become public anytime soon.
Tshuma remains in South African custody as the local court deals with the firearm, ammunition and immigration charges, while the extradition process is expected to determine whether and when he will be handed over to British authorities.
