Mnangagwa says he will still be in power in 2035

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has told delegates attending the Sanganai/Hlanganani Tourism Expo in Masvingo that he expects to still be in power in 2035, remarks that have raised fresh questions over Zimbabwe's political trajectory.

Addressing international and local visitors at the tourism event, Mnangagwa said he would remain in office when the expo eventually returned to Masvingo as part of a rotation among Zimbabwe's provinces.

"Masvingo Province has vast riches, it only requires intelligent people to utilise these resources. You have animals and gold, and what remains is your knowledge to best utilise these riches. After nine years, when we will be rotating provinces to host this event, I will still be in power," he said.

The remarks come amid continued controversy over proposed constitutional changes affecting the country's electoral and presidential term arrangements.

Mnangagwa's comments are likely to intensify debate over his political future, particularly following moves to amend the Constitution and alter the timing of the next presidential election.

Some people who spoke to the Masvingo Mirror said they were surprised by the President's remarks, although others said they were not unexpected, arguing that similar statements about remaining in power had previously been dismissed as jokes before becoming part of the political debate.

Beyond the political implications, Mnangagwa used the occasion to emphasise the need for Zimbabwe's tourism sector to plan for long-term growth.

He said frameworks and investment profiles showcased at the expo should be forward-looking and capable of meeting the country's future needs.

"The momentum generated by this event must translate into lasting tourism infrastructure, investment, product development and an improvement in the quality of life of our people," he said.
