Zimbabwe was plunged into shock on Wednesday evening following reports that controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo was among six people killed in a helicopter crash in the Marondera Rural area.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that an aircraft crashed at around 5pm in Marondera Rural with six occupants on board. Police said more details would be released once investigations at the scene had progressed.

Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana later confirmed that a helicopter carrying a high-profile businessman, passengers and pilots had crashed and that there were no survivors. He added that police would formally identify the victims.

Several media outlets subsequently identified Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy "Lulu" Muteke, as being among those who died in the crash. Reports indicated that all six people on board perished.

The tragedy has sparked widespread reaction across Zimbabwe, where Chivayo was one of the country's most prominent and controversial businessmen, known for his lavish lifestyle, philanthropic giveaways and involvement in major government-linked business projects.

Authorities have not yet released details regarding the cause of the crash. Investigations are expected to focus on the aircraft, weather conditions and circumstances surrounding the flight. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is expected to provide further updates as the investigation continues.
