Nearly 200 000 Zimbabweans have returned home from South Africa amid xenophobic attacks, with most making the journey without government assistance, according to a Cabinet update.
The update, presented by Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe on Tuesday, showed that 154 741 Zimbabweans had repatriated themselves, while the government had assisted another 42 553 people as of October 6, 2026.
The combined figure brings the total number of returnees to 197 294. The update also covered Malawian nationals travelling home through Zimbabwe.
Garwe said the number of people returning home had declined significantly over the past few weeks.
However, the government would continue monitoring the situation as authorities track developments affecting Zimbabweans living in South Africa.
