Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) president Douglas Mwonzora has vowed to continue challenging constitutional changes that he says could pave the way for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in power beyond 2030.

Mwonzora said the MDC's legal challenge to the signing of Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 (CAB 3) into law remained active, with a hearing scheduled for November 25, 2026.

"The President signed CAB 3 into law, but as you know the MDC has challenged the signing of CAB 3 into law. Our matter is being held on the 25th of November 2026. So the game is still on. We are still fighting on behalf of the people to preserve the integrity of our constitution," Mwonzora said.

He also criticised a resolution adopted at the recently held Zanu PF National People's Conference endorsing Mnangagwa as the party's sole presidential candidate at its 2029 congress.

Mwonzora argued that the resolution indicated an intention to keep Mnangagwa in office beyond 2030, potentially until 2037.

"What that means is that he will be their presidential candidate in 2030. So, the nation is being prepared for a Mnangagwa presidency up to 2037," he said.

CAB 3 was signed into law in July 2026. Among other changes, the legislation extended presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years and replaced the direct popular election of the President with election by Parliament.

The changes have drawn opposition from political groups and other critics who have questioned their implications for constitutional rights and democratic participation.

Mwonzora called on opposition parties and Zimbabweans opposed to the amendments to unite in challenging the changes.

"We cannot allow Zanu PF a free ride. That's why everybody is united against this CAB 3," he said.

He added that the MDC would remain at the forefront of efforts to oppose what he described as an attempt to weaken the Constitution.

"Certainly the MDC will be at the forefront of preventing this emasculation of the constitution," Mwonzora said.

The outcome of the MDC's legal challenge could have implications for the ongoing debate over Zimbabwe's constitutional framework and the country's electoral system.
