Rehabilitation works are underway on the Bulawayo - Victoria Falls Road, with all eight contractors back on site as the Government pushes to accelerate progress on the major infrastructure project, Zimbabwe government propagandist Nick Mangwana said on X (formerly Twitter).
Each contractor is targeting the rehabilitation of at least 20 kilometres by December 2026, while the Government intensifies monitoring of construction progress, project scope and quality.
According to the latest project update, 73.4km of the road has been rehabilitated to date. It has taken the current government 7 years only to rehabilitate 73.4km.
The works are being carried out in phases, including bush clearing, construction of detours, earthworks, drainage, surfacing and road widening.
The Government said the project remained a priority, although completion would take time given the scale of the rehabilitation required.
Once completed, the improved road is expected to enhance road safety, reduce travel times and strengthen connectivity between Bulawayo, Hwange and Victoria Falls.
The road is a key transport link for tourism, commerce and communities in Matabeleland North. The project is expected to improve access to Victoria Falls, one of Zimbabwe's major tourism destinations.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution when travelling through construction zones as rehabilitation works continue.
