Mkoba Teachers' College principal Dr Mavunga has died after suffering a heart attack while attending a strategic planning workshop in Masvingo on Tuesday.
Dr Mavunga reportedly collapsed at about 10am at Urban Lifestyles Hotel, where the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education's Strategic Planning Review Workshop was being held. She died at around 10pm at a local private hospital.
Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education Permanent Secretary Professor Fanuel Tagwira confirmed her death, describing her as a hardworking, dedicated and innovative educationist who made significant contributions to teacher training.
A local doctor had recommended that Dr Mavunga be transferred to a cardiologist in Bulawayo, with arrangements being made for the journey to begin at 4am on Wednesday. However, she died before the transfer could take place.
Prof Tagwira said Dr Mavunga had earlier collapsed while on official business in Mutare but continued with her work commitments and travelled to Masvingo.
"She was dedicated to her work. The fact that she was able to attend the workshop despite the intense heat we have been experiencing and the fact that she was not well in Mutare earlier is a sign of her dedication," he said.
He added that there had been no obvious indication that she was seriously ill when they spoke on Tuesday morning. Their conversation focused on her work in Gangarava, Gokwe, where she was building a teaching high school.
Prof Tagwira said the ministry had instructed the doctor to contact Dr Mavunga's children to obtain their consent for her transfer to a specialist in either Harare or Bulawayo.
"Unfortunately, at 10pm on the day she was admitted, I received a message informing me that she had passed away," he said.
He described Dr Mavunga as a vibrant leader with a strong appreciation for culture, noting that she established a cultural village at Mkoba Teachers' College and worked with the Angel of Hope Foundation.
"She was one of our experienced and outstanding principals who served as a shining example to others," he said.
Dr Mavunga became principal of Mkoba Teachers' College in October 2023, having previously served as vice-principal at United College of Education from June 2017 to November 2023. She was also a senior lecturer at Hillside Teachers' College from March 2004 to June 2017.
Following her collapse, female principals from other colleges accompanied her to hospital and remained by her side until her death.
Her body will be taken to a house in Bulawayo before the funeral procession proceeds to Mkoba Teachers' College and then to her rural home in Seke, where she will be buried on Saturday.
