Love for alcohol lands man in jail

THE love for alcohol proved too costly for 23-year-old Masvingo man who will spend five months behind bars for stealing two bottles of Viceroy from OK Supermarket.
Tafadzwa Mushaya, of 5798 Mhanimhani Street, Mucheke C pleaded not guilty to a charge of shoplifting when he appeared before Masvingo magistrate Ms Lyn Mary Manyika on Monday.
He was however found guilty due to overwhelming evidence that included a video footage of him committing the offence.
Mushaya who was sentenced to six months in prison will serve an effective five months after a month of the sentence was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
For the State, Ms Mukai Mutumhe said on 11 January, Mushaya entered OK Supermarket and took a pork pie and a bottle of Coca-Cola and placed them in a shopping basket.
The court heard that he proceeded to the liquor corner where he collected two small bottles of Viceroy, stashed them into the pockets of his shorts that he was wearing underneath his pair trousers.
After that, he went to the cash point where he only paid for the items that were in the shopping basket.
The court further heard that he was searched by an alert security guard at the door and the two bottles of Viceroy were recovered leading to his arrest.
The security guard was watching him through the CCTV cameras.
