Strive Masiyiwa buys a US company
28 Aug 2013 at 22:40hrs | Views
Econet boss Strive Masiyiwa has purchased a US company Seldon Technologies which engages in mass purification of the filthiest water turning it into fresh water within minutes.
The project is the first of its kind in southern Africa.
Below was his announcement:
"Go where the need is greatest, and the help smallest"...there is need for clean drinking water.
I know many people were quite surprised to learn that we recently acquired a controlling interest in a US based company, called Seldon Technologies. Many people said, 'its not telecom and its not in Africa, so why are you interested?'
First of all, we might be from Africa, but we are a global company. We have operations and investments, in New Zealand, UAE, UK, Bolivia, Dominican Republic, to name a few none African countries. As Africans we are not going to be part of the global business world, until we are prepared to participate in it. I always encourage our executives to look for opportunities, for our group, anywhere in the world, including America. You have heard my mantra of "go where the need is greatest and help smallest": clean drinking water is a great, great, need in the developing world: millions of children die needlessly every year, because of unclean water.
As an engineer, I love science. I eat, sleep and breath technology; always thinking about how we can solve problems. Nothing excites me more than when I see a highly complex technology like nano carbon fibre being used for every day problems. Seldon Technologies, the company we bought in America, produces a cutting edge technology which was initially conceived as a solution for use in high performance jet engines, but it could also clean water, even from a sewer and make it drinkable in a few minutes!
It is our vision to develop every day utensils, using this technology that will allow people in villages, and homes, around the world, to have clean drinking water. Watch this video from Seldon Technologies to learn more (Seldon Water Africa)
